Safety University - DOT EMS Instructor

SafetyU is one of the only providers of the DOT EMS Instructor course in the State of Minnesota. We pride ourselves in certifying quality EMS educators and thus continually assess our curriculum for cutting edge techniques and dynamic course offerings. Our course is accepted by the State of Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota..

Course Description: The DOT EMS Instructor Course is based off of the DOT/NHTSA 2002 National Guidelines for Educating EMS Instructors. This course represents the didactic component and practical application of the beginning education process to become an EMS instructor. We recognize that the development of a professional EMS educator requires many components including: formalized education in all aspects of the educational process, practical experience in teaching and mentoring by other members of the educational team to foster personal growth and development. This course DOES NOT include all these components, only the beginning steps of the process.

The assigned coursework is Undergraduate Studies (college) level work and will not include specific teaching of EMS technical skills such as “how to backboard”.  It involves a good deal of self evaluation of each student and will require the writing of short essay papers.  The topics for this course are aligned with basic instructional methods and NOT focused exclusively on Emergency Medical Services.  Thus, the skills learned here can be applied to many other teaching arenas. This course includes a 2 hour virtual instructor-led training (VILT) session that will acquaint the participant with live online instruction that is now accepted by National Registry of EMTs.

Goals of the course include:

  • To assist participants in achieving entry-level instructional skills based off of the DOT/NHTSA 2002 Guidelines for Educating the EMS Instructor
  • To provide tools and resources to participants who want to instruct EMS curriculum.
  • To provide foundational information in basic instructional process.
  • To provide opportunities for networking and interpersonal growth.

Summative evaluation of the course:

  • To assist participants in achieving entry-level instructional skills based off of the DOT/NHTSA 2002 Guidelines for Educating the EMS Instructor
  • A portion of the course will be conducted online and will include educational material pertinent to the successful completion of the course.
  • Participants will complete assessments throughout the online portion of this course.
  • Participants will be assigned a EMS related topic and will complete a 15 minute presentation that applies the principles of this course.
